MARI is a fictional account of the relationship between Western historian/writer Mari Sandoz and her father, Jules. (Sandoz herself presented her father in the classic and controversial OLD JULES.) Jules was a Swiss immigrant who was a dreamer, a cruel and abusive genius who was also amazingly kind and generous. This tale of pioneers is read competently by Parker. At first, she sounds somewhat unsteady and unsure, but as she progresses, the characters and the land they inhabit come to life. Her voice evokes the accent of the Plains, conveying the extremes of its people and land. M.T.F. © AudioFile, Portland, Maine [Published: OCT/NOV 99]
