While the first two collections of short fiction in Rattling Books' EarLit series include mostly local Newfoundland authors, this third volume features the work of the more-well-known Canadian writers Richard Cumyn and Steven Heighton. Cumyn's story, "My Future in Insurance," is well told by Charlie Tomlinson in a British accent that gives an additional layer of variety to this anthology. Heighton's "The Dead Are More Visible" is also compelling, as Jane Dingle's unadorned narrative style works well in capturing the emotions of the main characters, as well as the story's gruesome climax. The stories narrated by the authors have more of the Newfoundland flavor of previous EarLit editions, but they're less successful. D.B. © AudioFile 2009, Portland, Maine [Published: JANUARY 2009]
