A possible vampire, a speckled band of death, and the disappearance of an important treaty are among the strange subjects of Sherlock Holmes's investigations in six short mysteries. Edward Hardwicke, who played Dr. Watson in the PBS series, gives the good doctor a dignified yet openly admiring and astonished voice as he chronicles Holmes’s adventures. For Holmes, Hardwicke’s voice is crisp, slightly gruff, and he ably captures the tension as Holmes takes baffling steps in his investigations. The actor also injects much good humor into situations; Holmes's encounter with brother Mycroft, for example, is enough to make listeners wonder if Conan Doyle chuckled as he wrote.
