Old "puppet masters" never die, they just keep running their agents--until the tables turn, then they run for their lives. Le Carré's mastery is doubly appreciated with his narration of his latest spy intrigue. Like his agents, le Carré's reading is an exception to the rule. He outshines many authors' attempts to vocally portray the characters they know so well on paper. Le Carré's voice superbly conveys boredom, control, rage and fear.
