Before establishing himself as a world-class dramatist, Anton Chekhov gained prominence in Russia as master of the short story. This collection of thirteen stories contains a diverse selection which demonstrates the writer's skill at human perception. The narration is well-paced and solid throughout. The reader wisely maintains a strong focus on the story line, allowing the author's keen perceptions to shine through. Some selections, however, are given stronger characterizations than others.
