Jennifer Steil was working as a respected New York City editor when a friend tapped her for a three-week assignment in Yemen to teach journalism to eager students. Initially, Steil’s narration style is a bit low-key; however, her enthusiasm and unique brand of humor blossom as she details the achievements of her staff after she accepts a longer-term assignment with the YEMEN OBSERVER. In a country where freedom of the press is constrained and a woman’s status is considered inferior yet quietly formidable, the reporting techniques of her staff sometimes test Steil’s patience. As her time in Yemen lengthens, she describes her admiration for this ancient culture with its exotic beauty, intriguing Arab customs, and tantalizing foods.
