THE STARS SHINE DOWN

by | Read by Roddy McDowell

Fiction • 9 hrs. • Unabridged • © 1992

This rags-to-riches tale features Lara Cameron and the men in her life who either help or hinder her in her rise from boardinghouse tenant in Glass Bay, Nova Scotia, to real estate developer in Chicago and New York City. Sheldon introduces a multitude of characters, and Roddy McDowall is able to make them all come alive for the listener. Lara's slight Scottish accent is in sharp contrast to her father's Scottish brogue, made thicker by his heavy alcohol consumption. McDowall captures the dialects of all the Glass Bay tenants, the stammer of Lara's partner, Howard Keller, and the raspy voice of Paul Martin so accurately that a mental image of the characters emerges.
