A Boston maiden, escaping from the nagging of her stepmother, travels to San Francisco during the early 1900s. There she opens a "typewriting" business while indulging her sense of adventure and curiosity. Fields brings the young lady vividly alive with a sharp, no-nonsense tone that is enchanting. Caroline Fremont Jones (now divested of her feminine first name) enters her new life with a zest and humor that resonate in the narration. Even Fields's odd mispronunciations cannot detract from the élan as Fremont enjoys her city, her times and the people she meets.
