John le Carré is a magnificent reader of his own work. His professional narration may extend to only six or seven of his titles, but his articulate, caustic rendition beautifully captures both the sinister and the absurd angles of his latest novel. An expatriate of dubious background, Harry Pender becomes the respected confidant of generals, gansters and patriots in modern-day Panama. Le Carré's description of Harry and his dealings with a host of colorful characters--at the behest of the British government--is masterful, and his narration captures all Harry's uncertainty and bravura.
