Maynard Villers reads enthusiastically but has some technical problems--the listener hears him turn pages and change positions. Not only are these noises distracting, they're a reminder that Villers is reading, not telling a story. McCarthy's romantic tale of the greed, treachery, scandal and passion involved in the building of the nation's transcontinental railroad, and especially the decision between the "northern" route and the "southern," is riveting. Which side will succeed, how does it affect the Civil War and will the dashing Travis marry the wealthy Miranda? Buy for Romance fans, as well as Western aficionados.
