THE TRIAL OF ELIZABETH CREE

by | Read by Simon Prebble, Jenny Sterlin, Paul Hecht

Fiction • 9 hrs. • Unabridged • © 1994

Set in London in the 1880's, Ackroyd's intellectual murder mystery skillfully blends fact and fiction. While he tells of Cree's trial for a crime that shocked the country, Ackroyd weaves a compelling tale of the search for the person responsible for a series of horrific murders. Overall, the three narrators are effectively used in this production. The two male narrators are adequate in their roles, but it is Jenny Sterlin who steals the show with her chilling presentation of the crazed and diabolical Cree. Sterlin's voice frequently crackles with rage. At other times, it is a voice calm with cleverness, clearly the voice of a person we cannot trust.
