TWENTIETH CENTURY LITERATURE

by | Read by Arnold Weinstein, Victor Brombert

Contemporary Culture • 3 hrs. • Audio Program • © 1995

Professor Arnold Weinstein of Brown University lectures on Joyce's Ulysses and Faulkner's The Sound and the Fury. Professor Victor Brombert of Princeton University lectures on Woolf's To the Lighthouse and Camus's The Plague. While both teachers are passionate, erudite and commanding, Brombert, with his European accent, sounds a bit like a caricature of a professor--the musing intellectual tossing off analytical gems to rapt listeners. Weinstein makes a more personal connection, offering a generosity of spirit toward the literature and the listener. However, the performance styles matter not because lectures of this caliber produce a deeper understanding of literature, and that's what really counts.
