Austin Fraser's career as a painter spans much of the twentieth century. Through the voice of Tim Jerome, he recollects the memories of people who have caused his life to take an erratic path. There may be another voice that could do justice to the soul of this protagonist, but no one could do it better than Tim Jerome. He perfectly captures the crotchety old man, the young Fraser, the waitress who becomes his mistress, and the brusque Rockwell Kent. The mood of each scene is delivered with intense drama.
