The day Cordelia Gray arrives at work at Pryde's Detective Agency she finds that her partner, Bernie Pryde, has committed suicide. This is one of P.D. James's best mysteries, combining a clear, occasionally lyrical use of English with a good plot, strong characters, and the gritty realism that is part of her unique style. Davina Porter's performance increases the listener's enjoyment of the book by adding dimension to the characters and providing smooth narrative flow. Her English accent gives the reading a strong sense of place. This production does what the best audiobooks do--it takes an outstanding text and gives it finely realized depth and dimension.
