Though fragile over the recent drowning deaths of her husband and children, Medical Examiner Samantha Owens agrees to conduct a secondary postmortem on her former lover, Eddie Donovan. Intending only to fulfill the apparently irrational request of Donovan’s mother and her own dear friend, Samantha instead begins to suspect something ominous in the former Army ranger’s abrupt demise. With solid pacing, narrator Joyce Bean leads the listener through multiple plot twists and reveals the complex layers of Samantha’s simultaneous instability and resilience. Bean is exceptionally skilled at providing voices for the male characters, especially the macho military guys, but the children tend to materialize as a little squeaky.
