Written almost 20 years ago, BLIND GODDESS is the first installment in the Hanne Wilhelmsen series, which has only recently been introduced in the U.S. An Oslo detective, Hanne begins an inquiry into the death of a small-time drug dealer. When a sleazy criminal defense lawyer is also killed, she makes connections that put her in danger. Realism permeates Kate Reading’s portrayal of the cool and detached Hanne and her colleagues as they become embroiled in a complicated case. Reading’s calm, steady narration reflects the methodical style of their investigation. As they interview witnesses and put the pieces together, Reading’s engagement with the characters enhances the narrative and dialogue.
