THE WHEEL OF LIFE A Memoir of Living and Dying

Earphones Award Winner

by | Read by Ellen Burstyn

Biography & Memoir • 3 hrs. • Abridged • © 1997

As the final legacy of an amazing life of commitment and compassion, Elisabeth Kübler-Ross shares her story and philosophy in a moving memoir. Known primarily for her writings and studies, including the seminal On Death and Dying, Kübler-Ross here reveals the joys and challenges of her half-century of humanitarian work, which began with defying her father to work with Holocaust victims. Ellen Burstyn does a stunning job as the narrative voice of Kübler-Ross. Even though the program begins with an introduction by Kübler-Ross herself, in which we hear her heavily accented and stroke-weakened voice, Burstyn is fully believable as the voice of the author. Burstyn projects compelling energy, drive and commitment. Her voice catches with the emotions of moving recollections and takes on a steely obstinence as she relates the challenges and obstacles Kübler-Ross faced. While authors can sometimes add more dimension to their own narratives, Burstyn delivers a beautiful portrait, conveying the strength and compassion that is the essence of Elisabeth Kübler-Ross.
