Random House must be commended for taking on an area of literature that is still relatively untrodden, that of poor, neglected children whom no one wants. When three children from the wrong side of the tracks encounter social workers and the "haves" of society, everyone has their eyes opened. Dylan Baker is wonderful as he relates this sad and realistic story, which centers around a stolen pet rabbit and the children's survival alone in the world. Baker varies the children's and adults' voices in his own unique manner, but he particularly brings the bleak text to life. The epilogue presents just the right amount of closure to satisfy young readers. S.G.B. © AudioFile, Portland, Maine [Published: FEB/MAR 00]
