Beautiful reading has an extraordinary power of enchantment. In her rendition of Cookson's grim Newcastle romance, Jameson elicits personalities which, however repellant at times, breathe with diversity and interest. In highly charged situations she surmounts any melodrama, clearly delineating each foible and accent. Her only oddity is her timbre. For some of the men, particularly those of lower social standing, Jameson's voice intensifies, rising to a pitch higher than that of her female characters.
