Thomas “Tango” Harris is the head of an organized crime faction in London; his rival, Billie Crombie, is killed in the opening chapters of this police procedural. Detective Chief Superintendent Tommy Fox and his detectives par excellence are after Harris and Crombie in a complex tale of verbal and physical wrangling and detection in Britain and New York City. Nigel Graham easily follows the flow of the investigation, which is thick with British slang, police lingo, and diverse accents. His American accents leave much to be desired, especially when he portrays New York police with Midwestern accents jarringly intermixed with American slang from the 1930s in this decidedly modern novel. But overall, the ensuing crime, bravado, and bluster are ably captured in Graham’s delivery. M.B.K. © AudioFile 2001, Portland, Maine [Published: JUN/JUL 01]
