Narrator Simon Vance brings thoughtfulness and immense spookiness to this modern gothic novel. Gerard Freeman is a solitary man, whose life consists primarily of yearning for the house in which his mother grew up, a place half-a-world away, which he has never seen, and for his pen pal, Alice, whom he hopes to wed one day. When Gerard discovers stories written by his great-grandmother, Viola, it becomes increasingly clear that his mother’s past is far darker than he ever imagined. Although Vance’s narration is fantastic, the story can be difficult to follow at times as it switches from Gerard’s point of view to Viola’s stories with minimal notice, making it easy for the listener to become confused.
