REFLECTIONS

Narrator Patricia Gallimore returns listeners to 1920s Cornwall in Cook's poignant follow-up to LEAVING SHADES. Beth Tresaile has reconciled with her estranged mother and is eager to spend Christmas with her small family and best friend, Kitty. But when Kitty's brother--Beth's former lover--also arrives, secrets and regrets set off a series of events Beth never could have predicted. Gallimore does a marvelous job negotiating the numerous accents and inflections of this large cast of characters, disappearing into the various roles with impressive ease. However, her delivery of the narrative is not as sympathetic. As a result, the listener's connection to the characters, especially Beth herself, is lost when they're not speaking.
