Charlie Poole is horrified when two mob hitmen inform him he is "on the spot." He believes that his only chance is to convince someone higher up in the organization not to kill him. He sets off on a journey that is a great example of Grand Master Westlake's intricate, escalating, and humorous plots. Nick Sullivan has equal command over the clueless Charlie and the unsavory denizens of Westlake's wild romp. While the novella was originally published in 1965, long before Tony Soprano became the most popular character on television, it retains all of its appeal.
