PORTRAIT OF A MURDER

Narrator Julia Barrie portrays out-of-work actress Harriet Dale, who is now an insurance investigator. Harriet is hot on the trail of a stolen painting with a story behind it. As she digs into the theft, assisted by handsome DI Brice McDonald, Barrie adopts a variety of personas—charming and poised, young and adventuresome, versatile and reliable—each with a different voice and accent. She gives each of the various villains an identifiable accent and portrays the attractive detective with smooth middle-class tones. Overall, Barrie meets the challenge of the story twists with the perfect amount of emotion. Those who enjoy British mysteries will love Whitelaw’s new series. M.B.K.
