This wonderful story of a reclusive 72-year-old translator who lives in Beirut comes alive through Suzanne Toren’s heartfelt narration. Alameddine’s novel is filled with wise humor, and Toren gives the main character, Aaliya, a seasoned familiarity. She’s sarcastic in the right places, humorous at unexpected moments, and strong even during times of weakness. You can hear her age in the weariness of Toren’s voice, yet her pace and wit are perfect; it’s like sitting in a classroom with a smart, entertaining teacher. Toren embodies more than a character—she becomes the story, filling you with laughter when describing Aaliya’s grandniece or her three unavoidable neighbors, known as the “witches.” Both this story and Toren’s narration are thought-provoking and entertaining.
