THE SMALL PARTY

The peaceful home life on an island south of Scotland is shattered when its port is set on fire, and Ruth and her young children must escape from an enemy that is set upon revolution. The fear for the family's future is written into the novel. But the panic and tension are immeasureably enhanced by Hannah Gordon's reading. Her voice lulls the children and pushes them along from a closed car onto a rebel-ridden road to a clearing where they find sanctuary for a short time. Under the aegis of Gordon's voice, the children are cranky and whiny and normal. Gordon balances the sensibilities of each character and soothingly brings calm to the terror. J.P.
