SNAIL EGGS & SAMPHIRE Dispatches From the Food Front

by | Read by Stephen Thorne

Contemporary Culture • 12.75 hrs. • Unabridged • © 2000

Derek Cooper has been writing about food for various British periodicals for over thirty years, and has written and presented a food program on British television for two decades. This collection of his writings on how foods are produced, how tastes change, why processed foods are worse than fresh foods from local farmers (and so on) is in many cases dated and often incomprehensible to a non-British audience, as commercial brands and products, and the names of ingredients, markets, and even vegetables and cuts of meat are so very specific to place. Cooper's writing is informed and appealing, and Stephen Thorne presents it most ably, but this particular subject matter does not travel well. B.G.
