A WOMAN OF PROPERTY

by | Read by Jean Simmons

Fiction • 15.5 hrs. • Unabridged • © 1991

Annalie Gordon and Christina Gillespie both love Adam Moncton and conceive his children. He, of course, marries the woman he doesn't love, Christina, and takes no action as she forces her way into the family contracting business. Annalie is left to raise her daughter in the slums, while serving as Adam's mistress, before relinquishing the child to Christina and joining her gypsy mother on the road. Jean Simmons presents the women and children in this WWI tale in an almost painfully squeaky voice. Her strong Glasgow accent in their conversations frequently makes it difficult to understand their speech. Her men are more convincing, with less of a regional flavor and more deepening of tone. The narrative passages flow smoothly, although timidly, slowing the pace of the text. R.P.L. (c) AudioFile 2002, Portland, Maine [Published: FEB/ MAR 02]
