Using the device of an illuminated calendar of seasons, the authors progress through a year of planting, harvesting, hunting, and recreation in early England. Gardner interprets with good humor; the clarity and ease with which he speaks lends an immediacy to the scholarly nature of the subject. We are guided comfortably through an alien era that most history books skim over. While there are occasional references to the illustrations, the text amply fills in what the listener cannot see.
