The upcoming presidential election has lots of people talking about voting. Lots of people loved NEW KID, the graphic novel written and illustrated by Jerry Craft. It was the first graphic novel to win the Newbery Medal. One thing that makes the audiobook so special is the full cast and scene-setting sound effects that really bring the illustrations to life and make listeners feel like they are experiencing a movie. If you are looking for more immersive audiobooks about friendship and family for ages 8 and up, here are a few of my recommendations. Read more…

Born in the Philippines and raised in Virginia, Ramón de Ocampo has recorded well over 100 audiobooks—but kids most likely know him as the voice of the popular Diary of a Wimpy Kid series. His audiobook narration has garnered many awards, including 11 Earphones Awards and an Audie Award in 2018 for his work on the full cast recording of RESTART by Gordan Korman. These audiobooks, all very different from each other, show the wide range of Ramón’s narration talents for kids and young adults. Read more…

I love how a good audiobook can pick me up and take me far away from my current reality. While we can’t travel back in time (or even outside our houses right now), these audiobooks allow us to travel through space AND time, as narrators enliven different eras, characters, and events for young listeners. 7 Audiobooks about Kindness and Caring

As we are all social distancing, we might not be able to visit others or invite them over for meals, but we can let people know that we care in lots of ways. Maybe write a letter or send a care package to an older relative. Or decorate your door or leave a thank you note for a delivery person, or even start a “wishtree” in your neighborhood. Or maybe most importantly, be patient with the people sharing your close quarters right now. We all could use a little extra kindness, so I hope these audiobooks provide a jumping-off point to help your family come up with new ways to be kind and care for others. Read more…

11 Kids Audiobook Biographies of Female Leaders and Heroes

I am celebrating Women’s History Month this year with a bunch of new audiobooks celebrating female trailblazers. These are women who bravely spoke truth to power, who didn’t listen to their critics — internal or external — and who dared to achieve what seemed impossible. Listen and be inspiried by these women who blazed trails for themselves, for other women, and for all of us. Read more…

Book-based movies for kids

Book-based movies for kids

With movies and series based on classic children’s and young adult books like Little Women, His Dark Materials, Looking for Alaska, and Green Eggs and Ham currently in theaters and on streaming services, there are plenty of book-based movies for kids and teens, but even more are coming in 2020. Everyone knows the book is always better than the movie, so I like to listen before watching to see how the movie compares with the pictures I form in my head while listening to the audiobook.  Read more…

I was thrilled to talk with author Jarrett J. Krosoczka about the process of adapting his acclaimed graphic memoir, HEY, KIDDO: How I Lost My Mother, Found My Father, and Dealt With Family Addiction, into a full-cast audiobook. And I was even more excited when earlier this week HEY, KIDDO won the American Library Association’s 2020 Odyssey Award for the best audiobook produced for children and/or young adults. There are so many things to love about this audiobook, but for me the most remarkable aspect was the casting. Krosoczka tapped members of his own family to narrate the true story, and the result is unforgettable. Below, read my Q&A with Jarrett J. Krosoczka. Read more…
