Love on the Road: 7 Romance Audiobooks Celebrating Motorcycles

Motorcycle Romance

Motorcycle Romance

While I personally cannot keep a bicycle upright, let alone anything with an engine, I make no secret of my interest in motorcycles in romance. Their riders, male and female, tend to be free spirits with unique notions of a life well lived. Plus, a roundup of motorcycle titles seems the perfect farewell to the laid back pace of summer. This list is partially inspired by my recent listen of SAINT, a new motorcycle romance by Chantal Fernando, read by Vanessa Edwin. So sit back and enjoy! Ride free, wear a helmet, and love your listening.

Hot Summer Listens: 5 New Romances for Rising Temperatures

Hot Summer Listens

Hot Summer Listens

Summer is here, and it has officially hit “boiling hot” on the New England temperature scale. Are there other places in the world that are hotter? Probably, but I’m a New Englander, so I’m allowed to complain.

So what better time for hot new romances?! Listening doesn’t require actual moving (no pages to turn!), and it’s a great activity for indoors or beachside. Enjoy, and stay cool! Read more…

YA Romance Audiobook Summer Roundup

5 audiobooks for every teen (and the young at heart)

YA Romance Summer Roundup

YA Romance Summer Roundup

I’ve heard it said that, no matter your age, young adult books have something to offer you—whether you are yourself a young adult, you recommend audiobooks to teens, or you’re just a fan of YA audio. If you’re a teen, you may be listening for confirmation of your own experiences, or to step into someone else’s life for a moment. You’re also seeing how other people your age handle life problems and questions about growing up. After all, how many of us wish we had clever repartee—modeled after our favorite book characters—at the ready? For older listeners, we’re looking back and remembering, fondly or fearfully, our younger selves and measuring our pasts against the person we are now. After all, as Prudie says in The Jane Austen Book Club movie, “High school’s never over.”

I’ve collected five truly remarkable new young adult audiobooks. All romances—yay! And, whether your young adult reading experience began with Judy Blume’s FOREVER, Nancy Garden’s ANNIE ON MY MIND, John Green’s THE FAULT IN OUR STARS, or Sarah Maas’s COURT OF THORN AND ROSESyou’ll love reconnecting with the genre through these stellar audiobooks.  Read more…

Accent-uate the Positive: 5 Audio Romances with Awesome Accents

International Flags

International FlagsIf you were to bring together a group of audiophiles, you would soon hear a literal cacophony of impassioned recommendations for “must listen” narrators and memorable performances. At some point, everyone would be pulling out their phones and scraps of paper to take down suggestions for future listening. Laughter and mock swoons emerge as well as the inevitable professions of audio love: “I would listen to that narrator read the dictionary!” As the lovefest dies down, talk will eventually drift to the dark side of audiobooks—that is to say, the recording missteps that cause eye rolls that take your eyebrows along with them. Chief among these is the accent-gone-wrong. You know this problem well: The character is Scottish/French/Southern/Japanese, but the accent is something, um . . . indescribably not right. And so, it is my great pleasure to present to you five romance audiobooks with notably wonderful accents. Journey around the globe with these characters who are authentically presented by narrators who have done their homework. Read more…

Discover Faraway Places with Golden Voice Narrator Davina Porter

Davina Porter

Davina PorterWhen considering a substantial career in narration like Davina Porter’s, one searches for patterns. And with nearly 200 titles to her credit, where to begin? Digging into the audiography of this Golden Voice Narrator, I chose to focus on Porter’s many award-winning and notable titles. As the result of my deep dive, I do have one small revelation to share with fellow listeners: Porter specializes in—indeed she excels at—bringing faraway places both real and imaginary to her listener’s front door. A Golden Voice of Romance: Narrator Simon Prebble

Simon Prebble

At our recent Golden Voices narrator celebration in May in New York City, I had the distinct pleasure of meeting veteran Golden Voice narrator Simon Prebble and his wife. As a result, I can categorically share that Prebble sounds as distinctive and compelling in person as he does on audio. He also has the trick of a sidelong smile that had his wife laughing and turning her head in his direction — she must know when he’s about to throw out a zinger of a joke!

Simon Prebble is a remarkable chameleon of a narrator — with more than 700 audiobooks to his credit, he is never boxed in to one genre, one type of character, or one style. During our short, lively conversation, he mentioned his enduring love of the Ian Rutledge mysteries and another of his favorites, the Alex Ryder adventure series for tweens and teens. And he’s no stranger to the classics — I may need to add Henry James’s THE TURN OF THE SCREW, narrated by Prebble and Rosalyn Landor, to my listening list, if only because of that auspicious narrator pairing. Steamy Listens from E L James and Rhenna Morgan

The Mister

The MisterWell, “romance on the edge” was the idea for this column! However, I just finished up E L James’s THE MISTER, and I think “slow build” is a better description of her newest contemporary romance. Long before Maxim and Alessia are in love, you will be in love with narrators Dominic Thorburn and Jessica O’Hara-Baker. They take on a calmer, slow-paced story (If you’re expecting 50 SHADES OF GREY, this is not that), and they surround it with an elegant professionalism that will leave you impressed. After his brother’s death, Maxim becomes the new Earl of Trevethick, and as he adjusts to his change in circumstances, he falls in love with his housekeeper, Alessia. Read more…

First Comes Love, Then Comes Marriage: 4 New Wedding-Themed Audio Romances

Wedding photo

Wedding photo

Wedding romances exist under a particular set of rules that make them even more carefully crafted than your usual happily-ever-after romance. Not only do we (usually) know in advance that the characters have a stable, defined future ahead of them, but now we know that they are going to end up married—or are already married! Making this type of story fresh and appealing involves a lot of creativity from the author as well as a compelling narration. We already know the ending, so the author and narrator need to seduce us, shock us, crack us up, or simply tell us a story we can’t resist hearing. You have to bring your A game to make a wedding romance stand out.

On the other hand, many romance readers are suckers for the dress selection, the inevitable fights among members of the bridal party, and the misty-eyed promises of forever that give wedding romances a hushed respect, even from the most hardened pragmatists. Let’s get the show on the road with four new wedding themed (if sometimes unconventional!) audiobooks.

Rescue Me! 5 Romance Audiobooks with Chases, Escapes, and Swoon-Worthy Rescues

With favorites from Alyssa Cole, Linda Howard, and Selena Montgomery

An Unconditional Freedom

An Unconditional FreedomRescue (verb): To free from confinement, danger, or evil (Merriam Webster). Some of my favorite romances ever involve a good old-fashioned rescue, and these days I’m an equal opportunity rescue junkie, savoring moments of deus ex machina involving characters of any gender. So here are five recent romances featuring memorable chases, escapes, and even verbal disentanglements for your listening pleasure.

Karen Chilton will knock you on your heels with her reading of Alyssa Cole’s Civil War adventures in AN UNCONDITIONAL FREEDOMIn this third installment of her spy series The Loyal League, Cole explores the psychology of slavery and the bravery of Northern spies through the intrepid adventures of Daniel Cumberland and Janeta Sanchez, agents on opposite sides of the war. Chilton’s narration maneuvers through Daniel’s anger and despair as well as Janeta’s increasing doubts about her loyalties. And she handles southern accents and Spanish phrases with ease.  Read more…
