Rescue Me! 5 Romance Audiobooks with Chases, Escapes, and Swoon-Worthy Rescues

With favorites from Alyssa Cole, Linda Howard, and Selena Montgomery

An Unconditional Freedom

An Unconditional FreedomRescue (verb): To free from confinement, danger, or evil (Merriam Webster). Some of my favorite romances ever involve a good old-fashioned rescue, and these days I’m an equal opportunity rescue junkie, savoring moments of deus ex machina involving characters of any gender. So here are five recent romances featuring memorable chases, escapes, and even verbal disentanglements for your listening pleasure.

Karen Chilton will knock you on your heels with her reading of Alyssa Cole’s Civil War adventures in AN UNCONDITIONAL FREEDOMIn this third installment of her spy series The Loyal League, Cole explores the psychology of slavery and the bravery of Northern spies through the intrepid adventures of Daniel Cumberland and Janeta Sanchez, agents on opposite sides of the war. Chilton’s narration maneuvers through Daniel’s anger and despair as well as Janeta’s increasing doubts about her loyalties. And she handles southern accents and Spanish phrases with ease.  Read more…

5 Romances for Your Virtual Bucket List

Travel without leaving your armchair

Hate Notes

Hate NotesMy most recent listen—HATE NOTES by Vi Keeland and Penelope Ward, read by Sebastian York and Lynn Barrington—proposes the millennial’s version of a bucket list. Rather than making a to-do list motivated by terminal illness, the main characters accomplish adventures that simply make their lives richer and more fulfilling. Their list expresses gratitude and bravery as well as a good measure of silliness. Looking at other recent titles, I notice that they comprise a sort of audio bucket list. I’ve never lived in a small town with a large family circle, but thanks to the arch sweetness of Diana Luke in K.M. Jackson’s AS GOOD AS THE FIRST TIME, I can experience that—and so can you! It’s time!

Whether you watched the 2019 Audie Awards in person on March 4 in New York City at Guastavino’s under the stunning columns and vaulted ceilings of the Queensboro Bridge arcade . . . or on your couch in your flannel PJs via Twitter, I’m sure you enjoyed that wonderful sense of anticipation that comes as the Audio Publishers Association gets together to celebrate the year’s best audiobooks. The Audies have been given annually since 1996, and the Romance award started in 2005. This year, the APA streamlined both the Audies categories and the timeline, with the result that the Audie Awards Gala arrived in March, and titles from both the Erotica and Romance genres combined under the “Romance” Audie category. 6 New Historical Romances

Finding fresh takes on a favorite genre

Historical Romances

Historical Romances

Last month on Twitter, romance author Tessa Dare wrote, “We’re all six degrees from Austen, and the 5th degree is Heyer, and the 4th degree is Woodiwiss, and that only leaves 3 degrees to mess around with. Our family tree is a VC Andrews novel.” For romance lovers, this is a hilarious inside joke about the authors everyone has read and how inevitable plot similarities are. And it’s true that there’s not always much variety in setting and plot when it comes to historical romance. Case in point: Here are six historical romance audios we’re recommending to you, and ALL of them are set in the British Isles in probably the 18th and 19th centuries. Acknowledging that we do seem to love our British dukes a little (okay, a lot) more than is healthy, there is something extraordinary in a group of authors and narrators who are working within a narrow, often-traveled slice of history and yet who still create tales worth hearing.  Read more…

2019 Audies Romance Finalists

There’s a lot to love

Audie Award Finalist 2019

Audie Award Finalist 2019Okay, yes, I generally get excited about the romance audiobooks we recommend in our Tuesday blog posts. When it comes to the titles we choose to feature, I generally follow my mother’s rule of thumb — if you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all. So you know that I have warm, fuzzy feelings about pretty much everything that we bring to your attention. That being said, I hope no one thinks I am in any way exaggerating, when I say . . . WOW. The 2019 Audie Award finalists in Romance really stand out. This is such a consistently wonderful group of audiobooks. All the performances are stellar, the underlying works meaningful and realistic, and the productions different and yet equally compelling. I want everyone reading to know that whichever one wins, the others are 100% equal winners in my ears (see what I did there?). If I were you, I’d, you know, skip work for a week, download them all, and go on an epic listening journey that covers the romance genre from corner to corner. Without further ado, let’s meet the six finalists. Read more…

Warm up with Romantic Comedies

New favorites from narrators we love

Warm Up ListensThese days, if you live in the East (or Midwest or Mid-Atlantic or Northwest), you can’t look at a short-sleeved shirt without a faint feeling of nausea. We escaped the last snowstorm when cold air sat on top of us and pushed the snow out to sea but we’re due to get a couple more and they say, the polar vortex is breaking up through the end of February. (Translation: Snow. Lots of snow.) In my personal opinion, one of the things that makes bitter cold more bearable is connecting with friends and having a great time. You know that friend who always erases your bad mood and makes you laugh out loud? You get their call, email, or text, and suddenly you’re smiling? Well, welcome to the audiobook version of that with these humorous rom-coms! Insta-friendship coming right up with these fun, flirty titles. Read more…

Intense Romantic Suspense from CD Reiss

Narrators Maxine Mitchell and Joe Arden take on challenging material

CD Reiss

Rough EdgeNot all romance audiobooks are meet-cutes and happily-ever-afters. Author CD Reiss won the 2017 Audie Award for Erotica for MARRIAGE GAMES, narrated by Sebastian York and Elena Wolfe. The first audiobook in her new series, ROUGH EDGE, takes on war, violence, and sex. The content may not be for every listener, but narrators Maxine Mitchell and Joe Arden hold the complex psychological plot together with their well-crafted performances. Read more…

Romance Is About Family

Narrators Justine Eyre, Rosalyn Landor, and Tanya Eby remind us of the joys of home

Family by the fireWe’re wrapping up our 2018 romance audiobook journey with titles about family. More than likely, you’ve spent some part of the last week with some portion of your family. And, more than likely, you have mixed feelings about that! You’re thrilled to see them, you love their kids, but then you remember, they never show up on time for dinner and they don’t make the gravy/mashed potatoes/green bean casserole the way mom/grandma/Aunt Mary used to. Family is this inescapable gift of stress and aggravation that you wouldn’t trade for anything. So, in the spirit of surviving your time with family in the best way possible, enjoy some romances that feature family dynamics. Love your family and love ALL your 2018 listening. Read more…
