Comfort Listening: 6 Romance Audiobooks That Will Take You Away

Comfort Listening

Comfort Listening

Emotions are a funny thing. I bet over the past month, you’ve ridden a roller-coaster of them. I’ve had some high points—thinking about my grandparents and aunts and uncles who crushed cans and gave up driving during World War II as part of their civic duty and feeling proud to do mine by avoiding crowds—and a few low points as well. The day we closed up our library building to visitors, my Spanish app coincidentally was teaching me how to say, “I think I have a high fever and a headache,” which was more irony than I was capable of dealing with that day.

Last week, I became so mentally depleted that I needed a more definitive cure, which turned out to be the movie She’s the Man, starring Amanda Bynes at the height of her comedic powers and a younger Channing Tatum. It was a perfect escape movie, and it put me into a calmer frame of mind for a good three days. Here on the blog, I wanted to provide you with the audio equivalent—romances on the lighter side with stellar narrators and really catchy stories that will keep your attention focused. Plus (spoiler alert!), romance pretty much guarantees you a happy ending, which we all need right now. Love your listening, love your friends and neighbors from afar, love your pets for keeping you sane! Read more…

5 Questions with Narrator Tavia Gilbert

5 Questions with Tavia Gilbert

Help me give a big welcome to award-winning narrator Tavia Gilbert, my guest for today’s Take 5 post. Like many of you, I’m a big fan of Tavia’s work, and I especially appreciate her characterizations and the way she can draw me into a story. I can always count on Tavia to enhance the excitement of action scenes while also finding the emotional heart of the characters, no matter the genre.

Before I introduce you to some of Tavia’s more recent solo performances, I can’t help but mention two don’t-miss multi-cast audiobooks that feature her voice. If you’re looking for something to listen to with your family, then you simply must pick the latest audio edition of CHARLOTTE’S WEB, with its all-star cast. You’ll love the way Tavia voices the barnyard geese. For some needed escapist listening, give THE BOOK CHARMER a try. In this sweet, small-town story, Tavia highlights a young woman’s blossoming from guarded loner into loving aunt and friend. Read more…

Romance Audie Award Finalists: Congratulations to the 5 Nominees

2020 Audie Award Romance Finalists

2020 Audie Award Romance Finalists

The anticipation that some people feel about nominee announcement day for the Oscars, the Emmys, or the Golden Globes pales in comparison to the thrill I feel when the announcements arrive for the Audie Award finalists. Being a part of AudioFile, I sort of feel like Little Women’s crotchety Aunt March: I have a high bar for audiobooks in terms of sound quality, accents, and narrative excellence, but when the finalists are announced, I feel this wash of pride and excitement for the work that went into creating and judging these tremendous titles. I voraciously read up and down the finalist list for titles and narrators in every category, and then my scrolling hand slows as I reach the Romance finalists (they’re alphabetically near the bottom of the list). I pause. I get breathless. My brain goes blank as I struggle to remember every good title I’ve listened to or read about, wondering if any of my favorites became finalists. And then I read the titles, the authors, the narrators, the publishers . . . and time shifts from the moment before I knew to the moment of knowing which titles we will be specially honoring in this annual blog post. If this is that moment for you, I won’t delay it any longer. Let’s celebrate romance audio!

Unwind with an Audiobook

Lighter Listens for a Busy Season

Unwind with an Audiobook

Are you all ready for the holidays? No matter which December holiday you celebrate, and even if you don’t celebrate any of them, this is the time of year for festive parties, shopping, baking, school vacation, and days off work. Phew! Makes me tired just thinking about it.

You might be able to guess one of my favorite de-stressing tricks. Yep, listening to a light (or brief) audiobook. As much as I like literary fiction and various kinds of nonfiction, those audiobooks are rarely on my December listening list.

I’m craving fun, light stories to take my mind off my miles-long seasonal to-do list. Today’s Take 5 roundup includes audiobooks from a variety of genres, and all are perfect for holiday listening. Preheat your oven, turn on an audiobook, and let’s get baking and listening! Read more…

First Comes Love, Then Comes Marriage: 4 New Wedding-Themed Audio Romances

Wedding photo

Wedding romances exist under a particular set of rules that make them even more carefully crafted than your usual happily-ever-after romance. Not only do we (usually) know in advance that the characters have a stable, defined future ahead of them, but now we know that they are going to end up married—or are already married! Making this type of story fresh and appealing involves a lot of creativity from the author as well as a compelling narration. We already know the ending, so the author and narrator need to seduce us, shock us, crack us up, or simply tell us a story we can’t resist hearing. You have to bring your A game to make a wedding romance stand out.

On the other hand, many romance readers are suckers for the dress selection, the inevitable fights among members of the bridal party, and the misty-eyed promises of forever that give wedding romances a hushed respect, even from the most hardened pragmatists. Let’s get the show on the road with four new wedding themed (if sometimes unconventional!) audiobooks.
