5 Romances with Unexpected Revelations

Rewind to February 1. What did you think you’d be doing right now? Going on a vacation or attending a crowded conference? Having dinner with family and friends with more than five people in one house? Blowing out candles on a cake that people would then dare to eat without spraying it with Lysol first? Attending pub trivia on a busy weeknight shoulder to shoulder with everyone else? Turns out, life had other plans for us. The unexpected revelations of life can be upsetting, or, if we look for the silver lining, they can be fodder for excellent audiobooks! So let’s dive into romances where the characters are forced to face those curveballs, in the hopes that humor and a happily-ever-after can turn difficult situations into opportunities . . . or at the very least, a good listen. 7 Romances Set in the Great Outdoors

Remember when we went there?!

7 Romances Set in the Great Outdoors

7 Romances Set in the Great Outdoors

On the plus side, we here in the Northeast are still allowed to go for walks . . . I think. I wear my mask on my strolls around the neighborhood, and I notice everyone is very polite about crossing the street when they see someone, far in the distance, coming their way. Even getting some fresh air feels like an Indiana Jones-worthy quest these days.

So, from the comfort (hopefully) of our homes, let’s enjoy romance audiobooks that take advantage of the great outdoors, from Colorado to Maine and beyond. Even if we can’t hike, bike, or stroll right now, we can remember, imagine, and hear tell of such ancient customs. And there’s something fun about finding different ways to replicate the experiences we most cherish, isn’t there? I’m thinking of the man who ran an entire marathon in his backyard. It makes life special to think creatively, so let’s get started! Read more…

Fantasy Romance On the Rise 3 Must Hear Series

Kristen Ashley’s THE BEGINNING OF EVERYTHING: The Rising, Book 1 has fourteen narrators. If I had been able to mention every one of them in my original AudioFile review, that would have been a third of my word count right there. But here, dear listener, I am not so limited, so prepare to hear much more about this full-cast audio and its fabulous narrators. Read more…

4 Comfort Audiobooks That Make Everything Better

Have Cold, Will Listen

The Perfect Lover

The Perfect LoverI’ve been under the weather with a very bad cold, and there hasn’t been much that’s made me happy, with the exception of Simon Prebble’s narration of THE PERFECT LOVER by Stephanie Laurens. Whenever the misery gets especially miserable, I hit play and sink into his all-encompassing storytelling. THE PERFECT LOVER is one of Laurens’s early “Cynster” novels, recently recorded by Prebble, and it makes ideal comfort listening. The main character, Simon (okay, yes, two Simons), arrives at a Regency house party and is immediately intrigued by a longtime acquaintance, Portia. Prebble’s aloof yet dominant voice for Cynster embodies aristocratic arrogance without a smidge of overacting. (Important aside — I would really like that voice for the emergency alert system on the radio . . . and my GPS . . . and my voicemail.) Read more…

Tease: 7 Romance Audiobooks Good for a Laugh

Laugh-out-loud favorites for fun summer listening

Mixing romance and humor can be a tricky balance — and finding a narrator to dish out zany dialogue or ironic quips with droll aplomb is not as easy as it sounds. Often when I’m listening, I find myself surprised into unexpected laughter because the narrator snuck up on me with a covert zinger. Here are a few of my favorite humorous romances. These narrators have great senses of humor, pacing, timing and delivery. Add your own favorites in the comments!

Bet Me

BET ME
by Jennifer Crusie, read by Deanna Hurst
Brilliance Audio

If I were limited to one title, this would be it. Legendary in romance circles for the awkward encounters between Min and Cal as they fight a bad first date and the cat from hell, as well as for the memorable cherries on the heroine’s shoes, BET ME stands out as a romance sparking with verbal chemistry. Narrator Deanna Hurst has a voice low enough to score realism points for Cal and a humor that rolls out expressively through changes in pitch and pacing. Not to be missed.
