5 Favorite Audiobook Series: Part 2

Hours of excellent audiobooks to love

Pillars of the Earth

Earlier this month I confessed my out-of-control love of audiobook series. When a narrator clicks with an author’s work, the results virtually transport me to another place or another time and introduce me to my new best friends. It’s such a joy to know I can return to that world again and again in each audiobook installment.

As I said a few weeks ago, I couldn’t stop at just five series, so here’s another batch of serial reading that I can wholeheartedly recommend.

The 2018 Hugo Awards were this week in San Jose, California. The Hugo is a fan-vote award for science fiction and fantasy, and one of the most prestigious in the genres. Let’s look at what audiobook listeners have in store for great fantasy & sci-fi listening.

N.K. Jemisin once again took top Hugo honors, winning Best Novel for THE STONE SKY—she’s won three years in a row (the first author ever to do so!) for each title in The Broken Earth Trilogy. All three audiobooks are brilliantly read by Golden Voice narrator Robin Miles. Reviewer Emily Connelly called out this exceptional audiobook early on—her review says, “Listen and be transported to a meticulously built world that serves as a dire warning about the dangers of prejudice and power.”  Read more…

The Inside Scoop on THE STONE SKY

Author N.K. Jemisin and narrator Robin Miles on the Audie Awards Nominee

Robin Miles and N.K. Jemisin

I was one of many listeners struck by the intensity and depth of feeling that Golden Voice narrator Robin Miles brought to the Broken Earth trilogy. The last in the series, THE STONE SKY, is nominated for the 2018 Audie Awards in Science Fiction and for Best Female Narrator! So I was thrilled when Hachette Audio and Orbit Books offered AudioFile the chance to share this video of author N.K. Jemisin and Robin Miles discussing the narration of this trilogy, giving us insights into how Robin can draw listeners into the thrilling stories.

“I thought, how do we orally create a feeling? And so it became literally leaning into the microphone as if I were speaking into someone’s ear.”—Narrator Robin Miles

Extraordinary Worlds: Afrofuturism, science fiction, and fantasy on audio

Exploring Wakanda and beyond through audiobooks

Black Panther: The Young Prince

Like millions of others around the world, I went and saw Black Panther last weekend and was completely blown away. It was an amazing movie, and if you haven’t seen it yet, go!

Black Panther: The Young PrinceThere are many comic book explorations of superhero Black Panther out there, but only one has been recorded as an audiobook so far. BLACK PANTHER: The Young Prince is read with urgency and excitement by Dion Graham. As I left the theater, I was struck by the many outstanding science fiction and fantasy audiobooks that those who loved the world of Black Panther and Wakanda could dive right into, even if they are set outside of Marvel’s universe. What It Really Takes to Be an Audiobook Narrator

Xe Sands

As we close out our December celebration of the Best Audiobooks of 2017, I wanted to share some of our winning narrators’ lesser-known skills and challenges.

Xe Sands

These are tidbits of information that enhance my admiration for their ability and occasional bravery. Such as not panicking when a spider lands on your hand while you’re trapped in a recording booth voicing a romantic scene. Xe Sands, who read Helen Rappaport’s CAUGHT IN THE REVOLUTION, is officially terrified of eight-legged creatures. Yet professional that she is, she didn’t react until she’d finished her sentence, exited the booth, and closed the door. That’s when she screamed her head off. Read more…

AudioFile goes Behind the Mic to learn about Robin Miles’s narration of the final novel in the Broken Earth trilogy, THE STONE SKY. Robin has narrated all three audiobooks in the series, and she brings listeners into a world of violent seismic upheaval.

“THE STONE SKY brought everything together at the end . . . the trilogy is a geologic wonder in literary form.”—Narrator Robin Miles
