Golden Voice narrator JD Jackson's Audiobook Mysteries

What does it take to be honored as a Golden Voice narrator?  To join the ranks of such narrating luminaries as Simon Vance, George Guidall, Dion Graham, Bahni Turpin, Robin Miles, and January LaVoy? To be known as the “Best of the Best?”

Well, if we go by the 2020 induction of JD Jackson into this highly select club, you would notice two things about his body of work—first, it’s voluminous, and second, it covers a full range of genres: biography, history, children, young adult, literary fiction, poetry, and, of course, mystery and thriller. Poet and bestselling author Julia Alvarez’s first novel for adults in fourteen years, AFTERLIFE, is a timely and timeless exploration of what it means to care—for family, for yourself, for the difficult neighbor, for the person in need. Our guide is Antonia, a newly widowed, recently retired professor in her sixties. Dominican by heritage, she lives in a Vermont town where her late husband was everyone’s favorite doctor. As she navigates “a narrow path through loss,” taking “sips of sorrow, afraid the big wave might wash her away,” Antonia is caught up in the troubles of an undocumented Mexican farm worker and his pregnant girlfriend, and in the disappearance of Izzy, the most volatile of her three beloved sisters. Longing for her husband, the one person who would always “champion her way of being in the world,” she turns for guidance to his maxim: Let’s see what love can do. Read more…

I’ve attended so many digital meetings lately, and I’m sure if you’re working from home, you are doing the same. My digital social life is busier than my actual one used to be, BC (Before Corona). I’m not complaining. I’ve had several great digital chats with friends and colleagues about romance lately, which is an undiluted pleasure. In my recent romance chats, it really shook me when numerous people mentioned that it’s hard to focus enough to read. Life is too fast-paced, too different, too stressful. They just can’t sit and read . . .  yet. And usually the second thing they said was, But I’m listening to a lot of audiobooks. To which I say, Great! Let’s create some listening bridges between new titles and familiar favorites with these four romance match-ups. Go ahead and listen—it’s a delightful way to be kind to yourself in jarring times. 8 New Romance Audiobooks from Favorite Narrators

8 New Romance Audiobooks From Favorite Narrators

“Never judge a book by its cover”—that’s a good motto for audiobook shopping. Truthfully, many of us choose our listening because of the audio’s narrator. Contemporary romance narrators like Soneela Nankani (THEN, NOW, ALWAYS) and Justine O. Keef (LOVE HARD) are what I call known entities. After trying one of their romances, you’re probably up for another… and another… and another. Read more…

Let Audiobooks Transport You to Mysterious Places

Let Audiobooks Transport You

Let Audiobooks Transport You

Living in NYC, in the pandemic’s epicenter, under a stay-at-home mandate, I find myself thinking about the things I am missing most: Once I get past hugging and playing with my grandchildren, my mind goes to traveling. Getting on airplanes was a regular part of my pre-Covid work life. The last flight I took was back from Atlanta on the 6th of March. Then everything shut down. Unlike many folks who find travel a nuisance, I have always loved the entire experience, from the flight itself to being in a place with new sites, sounds, foods, and people.

Now, like everyone else, my wings have been clipped, and I am relying on audiobooks to transport me to new places. Below is a selection of audiobooks that take us to intriguing locations around the world. These listens engage us in mysterious doings and reveal the real people and customs that are less visible to tourists. And one of the keys to doing so is the power of the narrator to perform different accents, making the experience feel more genuine. Read more…

7 Kids’ Audiobooks About Kindness and Caring

7 Audiobooks about Kindness and Caring

7 Audiobooks about Kindness and Caring

As we are all social distancing, we might not be able to visit others or invite them over for meals, but we can let people know that we care in lots of ways. Maybe write a letter or send a care package to an older relative. Or decorate your door or leave a thank you note for a delivery person, or even start a “wishtree” in your neighborhood. Or maybe most importantly, be patient with the people sharing your close quarters right now. We all could use a little extra kindness, so I hope these audiobooks provide a jumping-off point to help your family come up with new ways to be kind and care for others. Read more…

7 Romances Set in the Great Outdoors

Remember when we went there?!

7 Romances Set in the Great Outdoors

7 Romances Set in the Great Outdoors

On the plus side, we here in the Northeast are still allowed to go for walks . . . I think. I wear my mask on my strolls around the neighborhood, and I notice everyone is very polite about crossing the street when they see someone, far in the distance, coming their way. Even getting some fresh air feels like an Indiana Jones-worthy quest these days.

So, from the comfort (hopefully) of our homes, let’s enjoy romance audiobooks that take advantage of the great outdoors, from Colorado to Maine and beyond. Even if we can’t hike, bike, or stroll right now, we can remember, imagine, and hear tell of such ancient customs. And there’s something fun about finding different ways to replicate the experiences we most cherish, isn’t there? I’m thinking of the man who ran an entire marathon in his backyard. It makes life special to think creatively, so let’s get started! Read more…
