Steven Pacey is a versatile actor from the leagues of British audiobook narrators who balance audiobook work with busy theater careers. When we caught up with Steven in London, he told us he likes to do audiobooks "whenever he has a free moment" and noted that audiobooks demand a concentrated effort. "It's a hard job. The red light is on from 10–5." Then comes the satisfaction of a completed recording. Steven is often recognized for his skill with characters and the scope of his talents in dozens of our reviews—in audiobooks for both adults and children. He's brilliant at bringing out the unusual British blend of suspense and humor in audiobooks for older children, such as Pete Johnson's RESCUING DAD and Gillian Cross's THE BLACK ROOM . Using his rich, resonant voice, he makes an immediate connection with the listener. Steven has enjoyed his work in several ensemble recordings that use two or three readers. He's recorded several titles by Julian Barnes, including LOVE, ETC. and TALKING IT OVER , with Alex Jennings and Clare Higgins. Steven's narration of GENTLEMEN & PLAYERS by Joanne Harris gets particular attention from us this issue as well as an Earphones Award. In live theater, Steven often performs Harold Pinter's work, most recently in "The Old Masters" and the Pinter Festival at Lincoln Center.
