TO GLORY WE STEER

by | Read by Michael Jayston

Historical Fiction • 12.5 hrs. • Unabridged • © 1968

[Editor's Note: The following is a combined review with PASSAGE TO MUTINY.]--Kent, which was a nom de plume of Douglas Reeman, here has created the nautical world of Captain Richard Bolitho that is every bit as exciting as the ones created by Forster and the late O'Brian. In these two works, Bolitho goes from the West Indies to the South Pacific, taking on pirates, the elements, the French and the Rebels from America, and assorted others. There is plenty of action, and the works display the author's intimate knowledge of naval lore and life. Michael Jayston reads with seeming ease. His narrative is fine and by itself a joy to hear--clear, crisp, even-paced. His vocal characterizations in both recordings are also superb. To give such a wide range of characters consistent and believable accents is a feat for which Jayston is to be commended. M.T.F. © AudioFile 2002, Portland, Maine [Published: JUN/JUL 02]
