This powerful historical novel traces the flight of a black woman from slavery to freedom in the antebellum North. Few novels depict this period of African-American history, and fewer still describe the complex emotions experienced by the runaway slave. For while our heroine rejoices over her newly won freedom, the memory of the child she left behind in slavery haunts her. Lorene Carey's masterful narration reflects the diverse voices of the black diaspora that was part of the culture of early nineteenth-century African America.
