The masterful Michael Kitchen has a trick of running one sentence into the next to express a character's bewilderment that perfectly suits this intricately plotted and immensely engaging book. Photographer Ian Jarrett falls passionately in love with a woman he meets by chance in Vienna. Ian goes home and blows up his marriage, only to find that his beloved has disappeared. Then he discovers that she was not who she claimed to be and that she may be in danger, the nature of which keeps shifting, leading him on. So richly detailed is the terrain (including a fascinating subplot about the early history of photography) that one is three steps behind the plot all the way to the stunning denouement.
