SEPARATE The Story of Plessy V. Ferguson, and America's Journey from Slavery to Segregation

Earphones Award Winner

by | Read by Donald Corren

History • 19.5 hrs. • Unabridged • © 2019

Narrator Donald Corren does a masterful job reading this audiobook. In 1896, the Supreme Court ruled that if states wanted to segregate African-Americans from whites, then it was constitutional for them to do so. That the case made few ripples at the time speaks volumes about the country at the turn of the twentieth century. Its legacy, though, was dramatic. Corren's tone has a compelling urgency that grabs our attention and carries us along for the entire work. He does this by changing his voice to sound agitated, express surprise, pause for effect, and emphasize key ideas and people throughout the audiobook. The result is a compelling historical account of a notorious decision that still affects us today. R.I.G. Winner of AudioFile Earphones Award © AudioFile 2019, Portland, Maine [Published: JULY 2019]
