John Churchill, the first Duke of Marlborough, defeated the armies of Bavaria and France near Blenheim, a Bavarian village on the Danube. In his honor, Blenheim Palace, graced by a Column of Victory topped with John's statue, was built. This CD details the history of the palace and, with it, the family--whose most famous descendant was Prime Minister Winston Churchill. Robert Hardy, who is a medieval military historian as well as an actor, shares the anecdotes with a familiar, knowing voice, although he occasionally is bogged down in details. Sound effects and music help keep listener attention through the dry spots. This volume isn't quite the same as being there, but it makes an excellent guide for those who might visit someday. J.A.S.
