During WWII the Japanese army captures four doctors, among thousands of other American servicemen, and places them in a POW camp in the Philippines. The story of their service and suffering expands into a complete history of the battle for the islands. Arthur Morey's quiet sandpapery voice sounds like he lacks the confidence to offer anything other than an unadorned reading. He indicates quotation marks only with a brief pause and takes no opportunity to interpret some of the poetry and ribald songs. While Morey's narration doesn't kill the listening experience, it does little to make a long and depressing story more enjoyable or memorable.
