When an uptown African-American Ivy-educated publicist finds herself pregnant and abandoned, she returns to her parents’ home in the projects, complete with welfare mothers and drug addicts, in order to become a part of the family she left behind. L.A. Theatre Works’ production is strong in its vocal presentation. Charlayne Woodward, who was a cast member of the original production, gives Undine a sort of “arrogance with a purpose” that makes her as fascinating to listen to as she probably was to watch. The voice characterizations are many and varied, with each actor creating several different characters to accompany Undine on her journey to reality and the simple concepts of love and acceptance.
