What starts as a routine obituary in a small-town newspaper develops into a mystery that spans several centuries and continents. Paul Tomm sets out to write a story about a professor from his New England alma mater and discovers the professor's life was anything but ordinary. He uncovers a trail of international artifact smuggling that reaches to Estonia, Russia, and several other countries. He also learns that the professor and others are involved in the practice of alchemy. The author jumps back and forth between the history of the artifacts and the present as Tomm unravels the chain of clues.
