Captain Nathaniel Drinkwater faces a passenger's long-nursed grudge as he deals with Russian prisoners and pirates on what should have been a routine convoy mission to Penang. Sabotage, however, sends PATRICIAN far from its course, endangering the convoy. Richard Woodman's novel, the ninth in the series, is heavy on the inner workings of the minds of Drinkwater and his rival. Joe Dunlop excels at voicing the conflicting thoughts of the two men, letting emotions and tensions drive the story and revealing the characters' motivations clearly. As the scene shifts to a climactic battle and a tragic, violent ending, Dunlop deftly combines the internal monologues and external action.
