Cook's psychological suspense about a kidnapped child is a study of the disintegration of the family whose son is the main suspect. Narrator David Chandler tells the story through the eyes of Eric Moore, whose 15-year-old son, Keith, was the last person to see Amy. His steady delivery offers no hints to the identity of the perpetrator. The realization that everything one hears is filtered through Eric Moore's perceptions leads one to understand that nothing is certain. Chandler's delivery is perfect; sometimes deliberately droll, he captures the personality of each of the main characters.
