This audiobook benefits from the fine narration of actor John Grasl. Abe Jacob, a Mohawk living in Miami, returns to his tribal home on the New York-Canadian border. He's a failed poet who's divorced from a polyamorous wife and suffers from a rare autoimmune disease that has no cure. He also has a snarky alter-ego named Dominick Dear Woods, who narrates this compelling debut novel, which uses Jacob's illness as a kind of metaphor for the horrors of Native American treatment over five centuries by "colonizers." Grasl does voices well; in particular, he excels at the clipped delivery of Abe's great-uncle, a healer. The arc of the narrative includes intense sex scenes, a violent bar fight, and a dramatic healing session. A.D.M. © AudioFile 2025, Portland, Maine [Published: AUGUST 2025]
