In this early Nero Wolfe mystery, the portly orchid-loving sleuth and his sidekick, Archie Goodwin, become with involved with Yugoslavian politics. When Wolfe is visited by a young, attractive dance instructor who also happens to be a fencing expert, he has no inkling that his Balkan past is about to emerge in unexpected ways. As it happens, the young woman, who may be Wolfe's long lost adopted daughter, becomes involved in a murder. Archie's first-person perspective is adeptly handled by Michael Prichard, who has long experience with this series. Occasionally, the hard-boiled quality he brings to his performance is reminiscent of a 1950s news broadcast, but his interpretation will still be enjoyed by Wolfe's many fans.
