This rather technical primer for business executives doesn't stray far from the lists, concepts, and strategic advice offered in the classic lesson on war written by warlords during the consolidation of China in the years 400 to 240 B.C. It's about the art of selecting and placing soldiers, setting up structures to train them and keep them loyal, and using resources and energy wisely in battle. The advice on intelligence gathering, communicating, and character flaws in leaders is interesting, but the lesson needs more contemporary examples or vignettes to make it relevant. One hears no vocal or interpretative flaws in Francis Greensdale's pleasant reading, but his good work does nothing to enliven what comes across as a guide for new military officers.
