STARS OF RADIO COMEDY Kraft Music Hall

by | Read by Al Jolson, Bing Crosby, Lucille Ball, et al.

Audio Theater • 2 hrs. • Audio Program • © 2008

"Radio variety" might be a more accurate category for this compilation of eight “Kraft Music Hall” episodes, 1947-49, hosted by renowned singer Al Jolson, with acerbic pianist Oscar Levant as his sidekick. Guest performers include Bing Crosby, Lucille Ball, George Burns and Gracie Allen, and Red Skelton. The comedy is at times surprisingly sharp and quick, and still funny, especially for listeners who get the topical allusions. Musical numbers are good, though some listeners may need to acquire a taste for Jolson's florid singing style. The sound reproduction is excellent. For those amused by camp, ads for "Velveeta Cheese Food" are a nauseatingly funny bonus. A fine slice of entertainment history, still entertaining for fans of the period.
